Uncle Liu has become one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants in Bangkok. I’ve eaten here several times now, and every meal has been excellent. This is not a polished, air-conditioned restaurant. It’s a true street food operation. The front is open to the street, there are fans instead of air conditioning, and on a hot Bangkok afternoon you’ll definitely feel the heat. You may even notice a few flies. If you’re looking for white tablecloths and a quiet dining room, this probably isn’t your place. But I f you’re looking for outstanding Thai and Hong Kong-style Chinese food at very reasonable prices, Uncle Liu is hard to beat. The elderly couple who run the restaurant, Auntie Lin and Uncle Liu, are friendly and hardworking. They speak Thai and Chinese with limited English, but the menu is also in English, so ordering is easy enough. One of the best parts is watching Uncle Liu cook. Everything is prepared right in front of you in a single wok, and he turns out one delicious dish after another. Even when the restaurant is busy, the food arrives surprisingly fast. My recommendation: order one of the stir-fried dishes with squid. If your experience with squid has been chewy or rubbery, prepare to be surprised. Uncle Liu’s fast wok cooking leaves it very tender. I’ve worked my way through a good portion of the menu and haven’t had a bad meal yet. And if you try something that isn’t your favorite?
