Dinner at Tasty Hot Prata on Selegie Road. Their chicken biryani at SGD $7 is unapologetically hearty and surprisingly good value. Let's address the rice first: it's definitely greasy. You'll see the oil slick. Some might wince, but in this context, it adds a rich, almost luxurious mouthfeel that coats every grain. The basmati still carries its floral warmth, so it works. The chicken, a drumstick-thigh piece plus a bonus side of tender parts, is braised until fall-off-the-bone tender, moist and deeply savoury. Exactly what you want from a no-fuss biryani. Accompaniments: cooling raita, a crisp pappadum, and a thick, savoury gravy. That gravy is not very tomatoey, more earthy and spiced, perfect for spooning over the rice. For $7 at dinner time, you get a filling, flavourful, slightly messy plate that hits the spot. Just don't expect diet food. Bring napkins and an appetite.
