Leaving the student dormitory area of Dhurakij Pundit University in Thailand, a short walk of about fifty meters along a path shaded by bougainvillea will lead you to the coffee shop called "Rabbit Hole." The old wooden doorway feels like stepping into a fairytale. The lighting inside is always warm and soft, with a few rattan pendant lights casting dappled shadows on the rough cement walls. In the corners, faded English novels and handmade pottery by local Thai artists are piled up, and the air is perpetually filled with the aroma of roasting coffee beans, mingled with the fragrance of flowers drifting in from outside. The mocha here is the richest I've ever had. The espresso is intensely concentrated, with a bittersweet flavor reminiscent of dark chocolate, perfectly blended with local Thai coconut milk, topped with a layer of creamy milk foam, and sprinkled with cocoa powder. The first sip reveals the lightness of the milk foam, followed by the richness of the coffee, and finally, a subtle saltiness that instantly elevates the drink's complexity. The Five-Nut Rice Cake is even more amazing. Unlike the overly sweet Chinese rice cakes of my memory, each piece here is ingeniously crafted. Steamed to an incredibly soft and chewy consistency, it springs back with a gentle press of a fork. The moment you bite into it, the aroma of various nuts bursts in your mouth—crushed peanuts, sesame seeds, walnuts, and even some Thai nuts I couldn't identify. The most wonderful touch is the subtle salt added, perfectly balancing the sweetness of the sugar, making it restrained yet sophisticated. The soft, chewy texture has a satisfying graininess, like the warm, comforting feeling of earth after rain. In the afternoons, international students often gather at tables by the window to write their papers, their mochas nearly empty, and only crumbs of rice cake remaining on their plates. Occasionally, pigeons land on the windowsill and peer in, adding a touch of lazy vitality to the shop. This "rabbit hole" is like a little nest dug especially for strangers; crawling in allows one to temporarily escape the relentless hustle and bustle of Bangkok, finding a moment of peace amidst the aroma of coffee and the soft, chewy texture of sponge cake.
