My first time in Chiang Mai, but everyone knows the coffee scene here is legendary. After all, some of the world's best coffee comes from these mountains. Here in the city, cafes are packed into alleys and hidden around corners well above your expected per capita. Little serene spaces of art, exposed concrete, and smooth wooden fixtures. It's hard to choose and honestly, you don't really need to. The coffee here is almost uniformly great, European by way of Melbourne, delivered with a Thai smile. The lone Starbucks Reserve (a ridiculous concept) sits satisfyingly empty. But there's great and there's perfect. Not here the typical Antipodean banging of the handle, flinging of the towel, and random explosions of steam. Not here, the well-worn grooves of muscle memory, and almost haphazard lack of attention. Third Place's young and intimidatingly casual baristas were obsessive in their attention, and exacting in their care. The flat white I ordered was simple, unadorned, and... perfect.
