Toke-Tong (โตกตอง) in Chiang Rai is a wonderful gateway into northern Thai or Lanna cuisine, wrapped in atmosphere, tradition, and flavor. The restaurant perches on the old Phaholyothin Road, about 900 meters from the Mae Korn Junction and just across from Central Chiang Rai, making it both accessible and unmistakable thanks to its yellow sign. From the moment you step in, the vibe leans into heritage. You’ll see wood interiors and lighting that feels warm rather than showy. There are options to dine Khantoke style—eating from low tables while sitting on cushions, which gives the meal a kind of ritual feel. At night, you might even catch local folk music or dance performances, enhancing that sense of place. The food is unapologetically northern. Classics like gaeng hang le (Hangle curry pork), nam prik num (green chilli dip), sausage & northern appetizers, joh vegetable soup, and laab kua (northern style minced pork salad) appear often on recommendations—and with good reason. The curry pork is rich without being heavy, each component in the set plays its role, and the dips and sides keep the balance.
