Right in the thick of Dotonbori, Shinsekai Kushikatsu Ittoku, Dotonbori Main Store (新世界串カツいっとく道頓堀本店) is a very tourist- and foreigner-friendly place for kushikatsu. There’s an English menu available and ordering is done via an app, so you don’t need to worry about language barriers. Despite being busy and tourist-heavy, service was efficient and well organised, which makes for a smooth, no-stress dining experience. The kushikatsu we had — lotus root, chicken, mushroom and cheese — were all properly fried with a light, crisp coating that wasn’t greasy. The lotus root kept a nice crunch, the chicken was juicy, the mushroom was moist, and the cheese skewer had that satisfying molten centre. You can choose how to season them, and the salt option was excellent, bringing out the natural flavours without overpowering. The classic brown, soy-based dipping sauce was also very good — savoury, slightly sweet, and perfect with the crisp batter. The yakisoba on the side was comforting and well-seasoned, with tender pork and cabbage coated in a familiar savoury-sweet sauce. Price per person: ¥1,000–2,000 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4
