Service was warm, attentive and professional throughout the meal. The restaurant remains a comfortable and elegant venue for a family dim sum lunch, and the staff delivered a pleasant dining experience. The highlight of our meal was the double-boiled apple chicken soup. It was flavourful, comforting and well-balanced, with a natural sweetness that stood out from the rest of the dishes. Unfortunately, the dim sum did not meet our expectations. During this visit, we tried the har gow, siew mai with tobiko, blue crystal dumpling with caviar and abalone puff. While the presentation was attractive, none of the items left a lasting impression. We did not experience the freshness, flavour or refinement that we normally associate with quality Cantonese dim sum. Given Wan Hao’s reputation and positioning, we expected a significantly higher standard. Perhaps the simplest way to describe our experience is that there was no “wow factor” from the first bite of any of the dim sum items we tried. The dishes were acceptable, but they lacked the freshness, depth of flavour and craftsmanship that would make us want to order them again. The biggest disappointment was the Wan Hao Fried Rice with diced scallop, shrimp, crab meat and conpoy. As a dish that carries the restaurant’s name, we had high expectations. The ingredients appeared generous and of good quality, but the dish lacked the aroma, wok hei and depth of flavour that define a memorable Cantonese fried rice. The texture was slightly oily, yet the overall seasoning was surprisingly mild, resulting in a dish that felt both greasy and bland at the same time. Given the quality of the ingredients used, we expected a much more flavourful and memorable result. Overall, the service was excellent and the apple chicken soup was enjoyable. However, the food quality did not fully meet the expectations associated with Wan Hao. We hope the kitchen will review the consistency and execution of the dim sum selection and signature fried rice, as these are dishes that many diners use to assess the standard of a Cantonese restaurant. Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant’s Sri Lankan Crab promotion is back from 1 Jul to 31 Aug 2023! 12 expertly handcrafted dim sum and a la carte specialties, you can expect a combination of delicate flavours, finest cooking techniques, and sweet, succulent and tender crab meat in every bite. Highlight from the menu includes: Steamed Crab Roe with Woke-Fried Glutinous Rice ($16++ per 100gram) Fragrant Glutinous rice with sweet and succulent crab. Hairy Crab Xiao Long Bao ($4.80++ each) Promising an explosion of flavours without the hassle of prying the meat from its shell. Salted Egg & Chicken Floss Crab ($15++ per 100 gram) soft, delicate, sweet crab meat perfectly coated with a crunchy mixture of curry powder, deep-fried garlic, chicken floss and rich salted egg! Wok-Fried Prawn with Egg White & Fresh Milk Crab Roe Sauce ($48++ per person) delicious and velvety gravy pairs perfectly with a bowl of steamed rice. My personal favourite dish in the Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant’s Sri Lankan Crab menu is this nourishing Braised Iberico Pork Ball with Hairy Crab Superior Stock & Bok Choy ($38++ per person) Melts in the mouth Iberico pork ball & hairy crab meat with the extra soothing and comforting silky-smooth broth.
