Watergate Chicken Rice is a popular Thai chicken rice chain, and this Causeway Bay outlet delivers pretty much what you’d expect, good food paired with consistently meh service. The chicken rice itself is solid. The chicken was tender and nicely cooked, and overall quality was good. Portions are a little on the small side, but still decent enough for most people. The chilli dip is good too, flavourful and essential to the meal. The fried chicken skin deserves a mention, crispy and enjoyable, easily one of the highlights. That said, one thing that really annoys me is how they never offer chilli dip unless you specifically ask for it. And when you do ask, the staff somehow look visibly unhappy about it. Asking for a side of chilli shouldn’t feel like you’re inconveniencing them, but here it strangely does. They used to have crispy chicken butt on the menu, and it was absolutely delicious. No idea why they removed it. A real loss, honestly. The noodles were good, and the soup tasted great, comforting and well seasoned, which helped round out the meal nicely. Service, however, is consistently lacklustre. Everyone looks and feels unhappy, and the vibe can be quite off-putting. The food is good, but the attitude really drags the experience down. Honestly, don’t come here if you’re already in a bad mood, this place and its crew somehow make it worse. Come for the food, manage expectations on service, and you’ll be fine.
