One of the things you'll notice immediately upon arrival at Winebeast is that this is actually a French wine import and retail shop (downstairs) with a classy, modern decorated dining area upstairs. Note, reservations are a good idea for dinner time hours, particularly on the weekend. The restaurant was rather full up during our recent meal.
Menu features a nice selection of traditional and creative takes on French cuisine. We were very impressed with the Frapas (French tapas). The beef tartar w/ chili and the Duck Confit Croquette with sweet potato puree where both surprisingly flavourful and delicious. These were winners from the start and had us thinking about returning soon for drinks & frapas.
Happy to report that the mains were much enjoyed as well. On the evening, we tried the Signature Pithiviers of quail with foie gras. This is a French puff pastry that was executed very well. The pastry was flaky but robust enough to hold the layers of greens, quail and foie gras firmly in tact. Topped with what I believe was a balsamic reduction, this was a very tasty main.
Equally as good if not better was the classic Rossini fillet, which was perfectly prepared and served at medium rare and topped with a whole pan-fried foie grass and layer of black truffle. The beef was pretty good on its own, topped with foie gras and truffle, it was delicious. This was a great steak order.
For dessert, we enjoyed the poached Mandarine, a light chestnut cream served w/ side of pistachio ice-cream. This was light desert with subtle flavour. We also enjoyed the richly flavoured dark chocolate fondant served with caramelised banana and vanilla ice-cream. Both desserts were enjoyed.
We left Le Bistro Winebeast with full tummies and big smiles and thoughts for when we could return in the near future. There are some very good French restaurants here in Hong Kong. You can include Winebeast as part of that small group.
