I went for lunch at Xiao Xiao Place and left quietly astonished. In a city crowded with concepts and noise, this place operates on a different frequency—closer to a home kitchen than a restaurant, closer to care than performance. If you are looking for food that is vegan or vegetarian, genuinely healthy, and deeply satisfying, Xiao Xiao is not just an option; it is a small revelation. The room feels intimate, almost domestic. You step inside and it is as if you’ve been invited into someone’s kitchen—tasteful, restrained, human. A long counter runs the length of the space, and behind it stands the woman who does everything. She cooks. She serves. She washes dishes. She moves with quiet purpose, without fuss, without theatrics. There is dignity in that kind of self-sufficiency. There is also warmth. As she cooked, we talked—not small talk, but the kind of conversation that emerges when time slows down. We spoke about vegetarian traditions in Taiwan, and how Taoist and Buddhist cultures shaped an approach to food that values balance, seasonality, and nourishment over excess. It clarified what was happening in the kitchen. This was not plant-based food as trend, but vegetarianism as lineage. The plates arrive with a quiet confidence, composed rather than styled. One centers on a compact round of multigrain rice, purple-tinged and gently pressed, topped with a slab of golden-seared tempeh. Baby bok choy and tender greens are lightly wilted, still bright and structured, with soft mushrooms folded in for depth. A fine dusting of black sesame adds restraint and nuttiness. To the side, crisp pickles of daikon and carrot cut cleanly through the dish, while a whole star anise rests nearby, lightly perfuming the plate. The flavors unfold calmly: nutty rice, savory tempeh, freshness, gentle fermentation. Nothing shouts; everything listens. The hummus plate is more expansive but equally considered. A thick, creamy hummus—textured, not whipped smooth—anchors the dish. Lightly sautéed pumpkin, zucchini, and red pepper sit warm on top, still crisp at the edges. Small side dishes punctuate the plate: jewel-toned pickled beets, a deep miso condiment, and a restrained chili oil, meant to be added thoughtfully. Dragging the vegetables through the hummus brings the dish into balance—cool against warm, soft against crisp. The service is not polished in the conventional sense, but it is something better: genuinely kind. No script. No upsell. Just presence. This is a jewel of a place. A reminder that hospitality does not need scale, that design does not need spectacle, and that a meal can still feel personal. One practical note: cash only. I would return without hesitation—not just for the food, but for the feeling. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: NT$400–600 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
