Truely disgusting experience. Don’t go here! The food is expensive and tastes awful. The goose is only fat and full of bones. I ordered a goose leg and it was unbeatable - barely any meat. 1/10 experience. Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Price per person: $350–400

“There is something beautifully, unapologetically raw about the Hong Kong obsession with roast meat. If you walk into the original, tiny, Michelin-starred temple of grease that is Yat Lok in Central, you are fully prepared to get yelled at by a middle-aged auntie in Cantonese, packed elbow-to-elbow with total strangers, and handed a plate of transcendent goose. But what happens when that legendary 60-year-old street pedigree gets uprooted, sterilized, and dropped straight into the sleek, high-speed, fluorescent concrete belly of a transit hub? Welcome to Yat Lok (West Kowloon Branch). It is a fascinating, mildly disorienting exercise in modern utility.” The Vibe. The setting here strips away the dark, weathered charm of the old-school siu mei shops. You are inside the massive, cavernous complex of the West Kowloon High Speed Rail Station. Everything is clean, orderly, and lit by intense overhead bulbs. There are no grease-stained walls or decades of charcoal smoke baked into the brick. It functions largely as a high-stakes, fast-moving takeaway counter. You grab your cardboard box of meat, secure a spot at the public station seating nearby, and eat while surrounded by travelers wheeling massive suitcases to their platforms. It is hyper-efficient, stripped of romance, and aggressively functional. The Attack. Yet, despite the transition to a commuter hub, the core culinary DNA refuses to completely die. The Glistening Skin: When you crack open the container of their signature Roast Goose, the lineage shows its face. The skin still carries that beautiful, mahogany sheen. It’s fatty, deeply savory, and yields a satisfying, crisp crunch that releases a rush of rich, seasoned rendering. The Comfort Bowl: Paired with a simple mound of white rice or dropped over a bowl of thin rice noodles in a clear, hot broth, it hits that primal note of pure Cantonese comfort. The meat remains tender, heavily marinated with their secret spice blend, and immediately reminds you why this name carries so much weight across the city. The Reality Check. So why does this branch land a conflicted 3.5 stars instead of the glorious five of its ancestor? Because when you put a legend on a conveyor belt, consistency takes a beating. Let’s be entirely transparent: this is airport-adjacent, train-station dining. The soul-stirring perfection of the Central flagship can feel a bit diluted here. On a rushed afternoon, the cuts can tilt heavily toward bone and gristle rather than the prime, meaty thwacks you expect, leaving you picking through scraps in a plastic container. The legendary char siu (barbecued pork), missing the intense, localized blast of the original ovens, can occasionally cross the line into sweet, generic mediocrity. Furthermore, you are paying a premium for the convenience of location. At nearly HK$100 for a basic meat-and-rice combo, the value proposition starts to warp when you realize you're eating it out of a paper box with disposable chopsticks under the hum of an escalator. The Verdict. Look, if you have twenty minutes before your train leaves for the mainland and you are craving a hit of authentic, fatty Cantonese roast bird, Yat Lok (West Kowloon Branch) is a godsend compared to standard terminal fast food. It is fast, it is accessible, and the goose still has flashes of absolute brilliance. But don't mistake this for the spiritual pilgrimage. It’s a beautifully calculated compromise—a legendary culinary ghost living inside the machinery of modern transit.
