I came across Tumkratoei because the view from my hotel room looked straight down at the restaurant. The building has a very open structure, so from above I had a clear view of what was going on inside. Intrigued by what I saw, I had a look at their online menu and was immediately sold: authentic Isaan food in a simple but sophisticated setting with more than acceptable pricing. The next day I visited to have one of my favourite dishes, gaeng som with cha-om, a bright, sour curry served with an omelette with acacia leaves. Unfortunately it was not available due to the season. Bummer. The staff was attentive and kind. It seems to me that Thai customers generally know what they want beforehand and order quickly, and restaurant staff are clearly used to that pace. After handing you the menu they often remain standing next to the table, just outside your personal space, ready to take your order, which for farang might feel a little pushy. On this occasion I had come prepared, but with my first choice unavailable I had to rethink my order. Even with an English menu it can take a bit of time to reconsider your options. If you ask for a little more time to study the menu, they will simply leave you in peace until you call them. Instead I ordered gaeng nor mai hed khon khao, a Northeastern Thai soup with bamboo shoots and wild mushrooms topped with ant eggs. Alongside that I had a green mango salad with crab, sticky rice, and a fresh Thai lime juice. Since I like spicy food — really spicy food — I made an effort to make this clear when ordering. Thai restaurants often tone down the heat for foreign customers, partly out of politeness and partly to avoid causing harm with the full intensity of the chilies. To get the full experience, you sometimes have to convince them that you can handle the chilies — and that you accept full responsibility for the consequences. The food was Isaan spicy, beautiful, and very tasty. The menu offers many tempting options, so I will definitely return to sample some more. When leaving you pass the kitchen, and of course you can always leave a tip, but saying “saep lai, khop khun na krab” (“very delicious, thank you”) to the cook usually makes them beam with pride.
