I randomly wandered into Yoko's place, who immediately provided me with a glass of water, followed promptly by an iced coffee, loaded with a generous amount of ice and coffee brewed to utter perfection. At this stage, drinking the coffee, little did I know that the man sitting at the cafe watching television - playing live videos by a Joni Mitchell-esque female singer on YouTube using some smart television device, seemingly to no one else but himself and Yoko (... and then, also, me) - would then spend the next six hours hanging out with me, talking about Japan, it's history, what music and film he enjoyed (such as Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Andrea Bocelli), and throughout all this chatter, him and I, we'd drive together to meet his wife, then take me (and a friend, who joined half-way, jumping in the car with two ready-to-use white towels) to a nearby onsen and dining establishment, where we continued all our invigorating discussions, ate a filling dinner, laughed, made more friends with a group of snowboarding students, doing all this like him and I were never strangers to one another; like we were friends, I guess you could say; like I'd been invited over as a guest to his house, kinda similar to the way you're invited to overseas-based family friends who you've never met before, who despite not knowing you, welcome you into their home with an impressive load of kindness and hospitality - it's a lovely feeling. This man wasn't the only person I met whilst at Yoko's cafe, in fact, I also met a musician, who ended up showing me his producer studio, which was located in the same building complex as the cafe, and we spent a few minutes together discussing the art of sampling (plus, he kindly shared with me the building's WiFi password so I could use the internet on my poor-reception phone); this meeting between himself and I taking place after he magically appeared in the cafe, holding a guitar whilst seated comfortably at the main dining table, strumming a little, then, glancing over in my direction, initiating a very nice conversation with me (him and I may meet up again in a few days - we're now Instagram friends, which is pretty cool). These experiences, and the joy to which I recount them, speak to the friendliness of Yoko's truly wonderful cafe, a place where community is born and fostered; it's a testament to her, someone, who despite a language barrier, communicated to me that I was in a friendly, warm-hearted environment; in the process, she brought many smiles to my face, and created such an unforgettable experience; one that will continually remind me of the power of connection (it doesn't take much to make a stranger a friend).
