“The world’s best bar might just be here in Hualien.” Fongpig is unlike any bar I’ve ever visited. Tucked inside a countryside homestay, it’s a place built with vision and heart. The bartender-owner literally designed and built the bar himself — and today it’s run by the whole family. You feel that family warmth from the moment you arrive. Every cocktail here is based on tea, paired with Taiwan’s incredible seasonal fruits. From oolong to black tea, every glass feels like a small ceremony — served in specially curated Japanese glassware, explained with care, and presented in a menu that’s more like a coffee-table book than a drink list, complete with illustrations and poems. It’s thoughtful, beautiful, and absolutely delicious. And the food is just as impressive: wok-fried squid with cucumbers and tomatoes, handmade dumplings, korobuta pork with dragon-beard vegetables, luffa with noodles, plus Western comforts like truffle fries (the best I have had), quesadillas, pizza, and bruschetta. Every dish comes out fresh, balanced, and perfectly suited to the cocktails. The dishes easily hold their own too, for those that aren't drinking. Unlike many top bars around the world, Fongpig does not feel ever crowded or rushed. With its strict reservations, the atmosphere is calm and spacious. The bartender and team takes time to talk through each drink, the stories behind them, and why they matter. You don’t just drink here — you connect. Hualien has been very quiet in recent years, but this bar is proof that brilliance lives outside the big cities. Fongpig deserves every bit of attention — it’s a place where family, craft, and Taiwan’s incredible produce come together in a way that you won’t find anywhere else. If you love cocktails, tea, or simply unforgettable experiences, make the trip. Fongpig isn’t just a bar — it’s a destination, and maybe the best bar in the world.
