Sweet Burger My laptop and I visit a lot of cafes. As an author, I’m always looking for good places not only to eat and drink but to sit and write for hours. As a teacher, I believe in scoring according to specific criteria. With that in mind, these are my opinions about this one. Sweet Burger is technically a breakfast shop, not a cafe. But it offers some traditional cafe menu items (sandwiches, bagels, cheesecake, caramel latte), and my laptop and I found it a great place to work. I first found it at the end of a long, exhausting bike ride through the wilderness at the edge of Linkou. It was the first restaurant I saw when I returned to civilization, and I was hungry and thirsty and longing for a place to sit down and rest and eat. Sweet Burger did not disappoint! Even though I live at the opposite side of Linkou and there are many closer breakfast shops and cafes, I knew I would be back. This morning was the first time I had a chance, so my laptop and I braved the rain and biked over here for breakfast and a few hours of writing. Food: ***** I had the tuna danbing the first time I came. It’s one of the best tuna danbings I’ve ever had in nearly 19 years in Taiwan! I ordered it again the second time, and this time the manager suggested I try it with basil as well. That was also delicious, but I think I like it a little better with just tuna. Later I got the radish cake + egg pancake (which was a regular danbing). Both were very tasty, and the radish cake had great texture: soft and creamy on the inside, and a little crispy on the top and bottom. It came with a yummy sauce that tastes like a combination of oyster sauce and Thai sweet chili sauce. Drinks: ***** I ordered the iced milk tea both times. After my tiring bike ride, it was wonderfully refreshing! It’s still tasty and refreshing on this rainy morning (and much cheaper than in a cafe or tea shop)! Later I tried the caramel milk tea, which was even better! (It was sweeter than I prefer, though, so next time I’ll ask for it with half sugar.) Prices: ***** A lot cheaper than most cafes (though on par for breakfast shops). Variety of Menu Options Available: ***** There are all the usual Taiwanese and Western breakfast shop options, plus some lunch options too. Sandwiches, danbings, burgers, thick toast, salads, pizza, pasta, bagels, plenty of side dishes, and a few desserts. There are also a number of combos/set meal options. Variety of Non-Coffee Drink Options: **** They have several types of black tea and milk tea, plus orange juice and soy milk. English Menu? No, I used Google Translate. The set meal side of the menu has helpful pictures. Wi-Fi/Charging Ports Available? Wi-Fi, yes. No charging ports, but I did see an outlet or two. Pleasant Environment/Comfortable to Write In: ***** Sweet Burger is clean, airy, and spacious, with two walls composed mainly of windows and plenty of room to walk around. (Being able to walk around and stretch my legs matters to me when I park myself somewhere for long periods of time with my laptop!) It was empty when I arrived just after 6:00 a.m., but more customers arrived around 7:00 (though it never got really crowded). There’s a TV that stays on, but if you sit at the other end of the room and face away from it, it won’t be too distracting. Customer Service: ***** The manager speaks English and was friendly and helpful. Hours: 6:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday What was the Restroom Like? Fairly clean. There was plenty of soap (not always a given in the cafes I frequent), but no paper towels. Additional Comments: Sweet Burger has a lot of low reviews, but I’ve found nothing to complain about on either of my visits. I highly recommend it, both for breakfast and as a place to sit and work.
