A Hidden Cantonese Gem: My friend and I were recently wandering around the neighborhood in search of something new to try when we stumbled upon Fine Kitchenette (為食館). In an area where many local eateries can feel a bit cramped or permit a lingering smell of cigarettes, this spot was a breath of fresh air. Though the restaurant isn't particularly large, it is impressively clean and, thankfully, smoke-free—a significant plus for a comfortable dining experience. The menu is equally impressive, boasting a wide array of traditional Cantonese dishes that are becoming increasingly rare to find. Here is a breakdown of what we sampled: * Tai O Shrimp Paste Ribs (大澳蝦醬骨): Unfortunately, this was the low point of the meal. The ribs were quite dry and overcooked. Most disappointing, however, was the lack of depth; they weren't particularly "入味" (well-marinated), and I could barely detect the signature punch of the Tai O shrimp paste. * Crispy Veal in Pastry (酥皮牛仔肉): This dish sparked a bit of a debate at the table. The meat was undeniably tender and the pastry was perfectly crisp. My friend thought it was excellent, but I personally found it slightly lacking in seasoning—I had hoped for a bit more of a salty or spicy kick. That said, the portion size was generous and the texture was spot on. * Pomelo Peel with Braised Mushrooms (北菇碌柚皮): A true Cantonese classic. You don't see pomelo peel on many modern menus because of the intensive preparation required, but it was handled fairly well here. The peel had absorbed the rich gravy beautifully, resulting in a juicy, tender bite that showcased the kitchen’s respect for tradition. * Signature Fried Noodles (豉油皇炒麵): The absolute highlight of the evening. These noodles were fried to perfection—wonderfully dry, "bouncy" in texture, and packed with the savoury aroma of premium soy sauce and toasted sesame seeds. It is a simple dish, but very difficult to master, and they nailed it. Fine Kitchenette is a solid choice if you are looking for authentic Cantonese flavours in a clean, pleasant environment. While the ribs missed the mark, the traditional pomelo peel and the exceptional fried noodles make it well worth a visit. It’s a lovely little find for those who appreciate old-school dishes without the typical "greasy spoon" atmosphere. Service was excellent!!! I will definitely visit them again Cash only.
