碗粿之家 – Taiwanese Bowl Rice Cake Surprise Right across from our hotel sits 碗粿之家 (Wǎn Guǒ Zhī Jiā), a business that’s been around for over 50 years. For the first couple of days, we walked past it without much thought. Then one afternoon while exploring the area, we finally decided to give it a try and it turned out to be one of the best surprises of the trip. The 碗粿 (wǎn guǒ / Taiwanese bowl rice cake) itself was soft and comforting, but the magic happened when we followed the stall’s “secret instructions” — add the sauce, chilies, and garlic paste. Suddenly, every bite came alive. Super, super delicious. We also tried their 花枝丸汤 (huā zhī wán tāng / cuttlefish ball soup), which was another unexpected win. Light, tasty, and the perfect companion to the rice cake. And the best part? The price. Our whole meal came to just NTD85 (≈ MYR12). Simple, affordable, and clearly loved by locals. The steady queue of people all ordering the same thing says it all — this is the hallmark of a great stall. Sometimes the best food isn’t on the plan, but discovered while wandering.
