Hidden Gem found in Yau Ma Tei: Sik Baak Faan (食百番) Checked out this place called Sik Baak Faan in Yau Ma Tei today. It’s hidden in a super quiet side street—honestly, if you don’t live around here, you’d probably walk right past it. My wife and I were just passing by after work and decided to hop in. The place is tiny. Just two big tables and one small one, so sharing a table (daap toi) is a must. Don't even bother asking for a private table! What caught our eye? The prices are actually pretty cheap, but the real reason we went in was the open kitchen. You can see the two chefs constantly tossing their woks—it’s like a live show! Once you see that wok hei action, you just have to try it. The Food The menu has a good mix. We ordered: • Thai-style stir-fried Ho Fun with Pork Jowl • Scrambled Eggs with Char Siu & Scallions • Stir-fried Beef with Choy Sum & Crispy Lard (The two stir-fry dishes already come with a bowl of white rice each.) The food came out in hot clay pots, which was a nice touch. • Char Siu Scrambled Eggs: The eggs were super silky, not dry at all. Plenty of char siu too. Most importantly, it didn’t feel like there was a ton of MSG. It’s the perfect comfort food to go with rice. • Beef with Choy Sum & Lard: The beef was great—it actually tasted like real beef! It wasn't that mushy texture you get when places use too much baking soda. Plus, they added crispy lard bits which made it taste amazing. • Pork Jowl Ho Fun: This came out piping hot. It wasn’t oily at all and felt really "clean" and well-made. Verdict We literally finished everything. Every bit of the noodles and both bowls of rice—gone! I really didn't expect to find such a good spot in Yau Ma Tei. If you’re in the area, definitely go look for it. It’s way better than your average Cha Chaan Teng or big restaurant.
