A hidden gem across from the disappointment! I went to Dongdaemun specifically for the smoked duck place across the street that gets all the attention. (*That was a complete disaster). - Then I crossed the street, walked upstairs to Dongbuk Hwa Gwa Wang, and discovered the real reason to come to this block. This is genuine Northern Chinese cuisine — the kind you rarely see in Seoul. The menu is 13 pages, fully illustrated, with explanations in both Chinese and English. The staff couldn’t have been kinder. When I sat down they brought me a huge 13 page menu that described each dish (with pictures) after studying the menu for 10 minutes, I realized the “special duck” wasn’t on this menu and I was in the wrong place !! Wow, they laughed it off and kindly showed me where the place was that I had intended to have lunch, wishing me well with smiles on their faces, they couldn’t have been sweeter . So off I went to get that “special” DUCK and that is a whole Nother story …. but suffice to say don’t go there. You will thank me for warning you (btw I have posted a review of regarding that meal) So long story short after I left the duck place (a HUGE mistake going there), I came back to this restaurant, intending to maybe take a couple bites of a one of the dishes that intrigued me and then bring it home as “carry out” because I just finished eating at that duck place, their not so special duck and my taste buds were killed and my appetite was kind of shot— anyways they welcomed me back like a regular. I ordered the sizzling iron-plate beef. They brought it out covered in tinfoil and warned me not to open it until the sizzling stopped, or I’d burn myself. When I finally lifted the foil, the plate was heaped about five inches high — tender beef stir-fried with bok choy, beautiful whole mushrooms, vibrant red peppers, onions, and scallions, all caught in a glossy savory sauce. The plate literally couldn’t hold any more food. Crispy, hot, deeply flavorful — every bite earned. The contrast with the smoked duck place across the street was night and day. 17,000원 here for a meal I couldn’t finish, versus 40,000원 across the street for a meal I regretted. Better food, better value, better people. Top-notch customer service from start to finish. If you’re in Dongdaemun and looking for something that isn’t the usual Korean BBQ or hotteok crawl, skip the duck place. Go upstairs across the street instead. You’ll eat better, pay less, and be treated like family. I’m coming back the next chance I get — there are at least seven other things on that menu I still want to try. I’m sorry I didn’t take a picture of it when it first came to the table, I had intended to, but I was just so amazed that I dug right in and didn’t stop until I realized I had overate, it was that good! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: ₩10,000–20,000 Recommended dishes: Charcoal Grilled Spareribs Vegetarian options: They have everything you could think of that is a huge menu there is something for everyone at this restaurant I kid you not! Wheelchair accessibility: No, there are stairs. This is on the second floor.
