If you’re walking along the beloved Gyeongui Line Forest Park from Yongsan and start to feel hungry, this is a good place to stop for old-style tonkatsu—thin, crisply fried pork cutlet. This is exactly how the dish was served at what Koreans once called “light Western restaurants” (gyeong-yang-sik) in the 1970s and 1980s, when tonkatsu was a real treat. In keeping with that tradition, the meal begins with soup. The tonkatsu itself is thin, coated in a familiar savory sauce, and served with a generous pile of shredded cabbage. It’s light, but still satisfying. They also offer chicken katsu, which is surprisingly hard to find these days, and it’s very good. What really sets this place apart is the self-service rice and dessert. You can help yourself to as much rice as you like, along with kimchi and sliced green peppers. Dessert options include coffee, yulmu tea, maesil tea, and ice cream. If you visit during a slower time, it’s easy to linger, talk, and enjoy a drink after the meal.
