I absolutely do not recommend this restaurant to anyone who doesn't speak Korean. This was hands down the worst experience of my entire trip to Korea. Toward the end of my solo trip, I suddenly craved Hanwoo (Korean beef) grilled meat. After looking up general restaurant policies in Korea and checking this place's menu, I figured ordering two portions by myself would comply with the usual rules. To be completely safe and avoid any discrepancies in individual restaurant policies, I specifically searched for the relevant Korean phrases and cross-checked them with AI to ensure there were no weird mistranslations. I wanted to make sure the staff could fully understand and accept my intentions before seating me. That morning, I managed to keep my composure among the dazzling array of bread at Sung Sim Dang. My stomach was strictly reserved for a two-portion meat feast on the grill; I couldn't surrender there. When the restaurant finally opened, I showed the waitress the pre-prepared Korean text on my phone at the entrance. She initially tried to seat me at a table without a grill mesh but then moved me to one with a proper grill. Although she was muttering something under her breath, I assumed my "double-portion grilling plan" had been approved. The waitress spread the menu across the table, opening it precisely to the page with the grilled meat items I had researched. Even with a language barrier, ordering by pointing at the menu and gesturing numbers shouldn't be that hard, right? She pointed at the item I wanted and seemed to be confirming the price in Korean, gesturing "four four"—which perfectly matched the 44,000 KRW for two portions. I gave a firm nod, and she took the menu away. Everything seemed on track, and I eagerly anticipated the sizzling meat that was about to appear on the grill. Then, she spoke to me in Korean again. I lost count of how many times this had happened. I hadn't uttered a single word of Korean since entering the shop. I guessed she might be confirming the number of side dishes to serve, since her sentence heavily emphasized the word "hana" (one)—one of the few Korean words I actually know—while gesturing the number one. Although a bit confused, I felt it was acceptable whether she was letting me order just one portion of meat or only planning to serve one set of side dishes, so I replied, "OK." She looked immensely relieved and walked away. A while later, the food arrived, but it wasn't the grilled meat I expected. That was the exact moment I realized what had happened. The waitress had just asked me in Korean if I wanted to change my order to a different dish, and I had said OK. Everything was beyond repair. The craving for grilled meat I had been building up since the night before instantly crashed to rock bottom. I was overwhelmed with confusion. I clearly didn't understand Korean, so if she wanted me to change my order, why not just use the English menu? Even if the concept she wanted to explain wasn't easily shown on the menu, I had already demonstrated right at the entrance that I had a translation app on my phone. Not to mention, I made it clear from the very beginning that I wanted to eat two portions of meat on the grill. If I misunderstood the restaurant's policy, I am truly sorry, but where on earth did things go wrong? The food wasn't bad, and I was starving, but I completely lost my appetite. I ate a little in a hurry, paid the bill, and left. I felt terrible about the wasted food, but at the end of the day, that simply wasn't what I ordered. By then, it was too late to go to another grill restaurant, and I no longer had the stomach to finish two portions of meat anyway. This lingering regret followed me all the way to the airport as I boarded my late flight out of Korea. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ₩20,000–30,000

I came here with my family, who are locals from Daejeon, hoping to enjoy meal together. My husband is a big fan of naengmyeon, and my family recommended this place so he could try a local favorite. Unfortunately, the experience fell short in several ways. Right from the start, the service was cold and unwelcoming. We were a party of seven, including three vegetarians who ordered different dishes from the menu. As soon as the staff realized not everyone would be ordering a full meal or eating meat, their attitude noticeably shifted. What started as indifferent service turned into something close to passive-aggressive—disinterested, rushed, and lacking even basic hospitality. While the food itself was passable—neither terrible nor particularly memorable—it simply couldn't redeem the atmosphere created by the staff. It's a shame, because we genuinely wanted to enjoy the experience after seeing each other in 3 years. But the unfriendly treatment left a lasting impression that overshadowed everything else. Even if the food had been exceptional, the service left such a bad taste that we wouldn’t return or recommend it. Food: 2 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
