Nostalgic for my college days, I recently revisited Samtong Chicken(Samtong Chicken, formerly Samsung Tongdak) in front of Korea University. I headed there expecting the lively and cozy romance of the old campus alleys, but perhaps due to the passage of time, the unique college town atmosphere didn't feel as vibrant as it used to, leaving me with a bit of a bittersweet feeling. The signature fried chicken, which I was looking forward to the most, also fell slightly short of my memories. Although it was served crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, it seemed to lack that distinct, deeply savory punch and addictive flavor profile that the original shop used to boast back in the day. Even so, the nostalgic cabbage salad topped with the classic ketchup-mayo dressing was wonderful to see again, and we gladly finished two whole plates of it. The accompanying draft beer was also exactly as I remembered, consistently presenting that light and crisp finish that pairs absolutely perfectly with fried chicken by cutting through the richness. While the taste of the chicken has changed over the years, the flawless combination of the crunchy salad and a cold beer still makes it a decent spot to enjoy a casual meal and reminisce about old times.
