Stepping down into the basement of the Hyoryeong Building in Mugyo-dong—a bustling district packed with corporate high-rises—feels like taking a nostalgic step back in time. Yeongdeok Hoe-sikdang may lack modern flash or sophistication, but it possesses a raw, comforting charm that has clearly comforted weary office workers for years. Arriving around dusk, the restaurant was already brimming with the lively, clinking energy of people winding down their day. Even the ambient clamor added to the distinct, romantic charm of a traditional Korean tavern (seonsuljib). The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the Mulhoe (spicy raw fish soup/salad). The dish arrived beautifully arranged with fresh, finely sliced raw fish topped with a vibrant red seasoning paste, fragrant seaweed flakes, and a generous sprinkle of sesame seeds. Unlike the overly icy, soupy versions found elsewhere, this Yeongdeok-style mulhoe is mixed more like a rich, concentrated salad, allowing the natural flavors of the ingredients to take center stage. The true masterstroke, however, was the abundance of fresh sea mustard (miyeok) served on the side. Wrapping a spoonful of the spicy, tangy fish in the clean, ocean-scented sea mustard created a flawless harmony of chewy and crunchy textures. The bold flavor profile momentarily makes you forget that you are sitting in the dead center of a massive metropolis. What truly elevates the dining experience here is the human warmth that fills the room. Despite the bustling crowd, the experienced waitstaff—affectionately addressed as Imo (aunties)—manage the floor with seasoned efficiency and a delightfully friendly demeanor. Their hospitable touch lends a cozy familiarity to the rustic tavern. Between the lively bursts of laughter, the heartwarming service, and a stellar plate of mulhoe, Yeongdeok Hoe-sikdang is more than just a place to eat; it is a precious sanctuary where one can recharge with human warmth and vibrant energy after a long day.
