I visited this 흑돼지 BBQ restaurant in Jeju with my Italian girlfriend, both of us visitors on the island, and sadly our experience raised concerns beyond just poor service and food quality—there seemed to be a hint of discrimination toward outsiders. Service & Atmosphere We arrived at 8:30 PM and were seated promptly, but thereafter we were effectively ignored. The owner spent most of the evening watching TV and drinking with local patrons, rarely acknowledging our table. As non-locals—my girlfriend is Italian and I’m not from Jeju—we couldn’t help but wonder if our outsider status contributed to the neglect. Quality of Food The promised premium 흑돼지 was disappointingly fatty, with virtually no lean meat on each slice. Rather than enjoying the balanced flavor and texture that well-prepared black pork should offer, we were left with thick strips of unrendered fat. Given the chef’s apparent disinterest in his product, it felt as if we were an afterthought rather than valued diners. Side Dishes & Condiments Despite arriving not too late in the dinner service, we were told that almost all side dishes had run out. It strains credibility that staples like kimchi and garlic could be fully depleted by 8:30 PM—and yet, there was no attempt to check for a backup supply. Conclusion Jeju’s 흑돼지 is renowned for its exceptional taste, but this restaurant fails on multiple fronts: inattentive, possibly discriminatory service; poor meat quality; and a lack of essential accompaniments. If you’re looking for an authentic 흑돼지 BBQ experience on Jeju Island, I strongly recommend seeking a venue where all guests—locals and visitors alike—are genuinely welcomed and well served.
