Oh, so delicious. That thought always echoed in my mind whenever I sat down to eat there. During my days working in Yeouido, I often made a point of going alone to this little place at the Gongdeok intersection, where they served a piping hot bowl of sundaegukbap (Korean blood sausage soup). It was my secret escape, a place where I could indulge in something truly comforting. Despite feeling a bit guilty for taking up a table by myself in such a busy spot, the staff always welcomed me with warm smiles. They never made me feel awkward; in fact, they seemed genuinely happy to see me every time. Thank you, I’d think to myself—your food was always incredible, and I savored every bite. I wonder if it’s still as good as I remember. Looking back, I realize that this was more than just food—it was soul food, the kind that fills more than just your stomach. That little shop wasn’t fancy or modern by any stretch. It was old, cramped, and always bustling. Not exactly the kind of place you’d take a date, but with close friends, it couldn’t have been better. It had its own charm, a sense of authenticity that made every visit feel special. I’ve tasted countless dishes in many countries, sampled gourmet meals and trendy bites, but most of them have faded from memory. Yet, the thought of eating jajangmyeon and tangsuyuk from a small neighborhood Chinese joint in Korea, or a hot bowl of sundaegukbap, makes me long for them all the more as the years pass. The memories of those extravagant or expensive meals from famous restaurants may have evaporated, but the taste of these humble, comforting dishes remains sharp in my mind. Along with those flavors come the vivid recollections of the places, the spaces, and, most of all, the friends who shared those moments with me. The passage of time has only made them clearer.
