After exploring around Hwagaejangteo Market, which is filled with rustic musical nostalgia, I visited Cheongsong Sikdang, a local restaurant nearby, to taste the regional delicacies of the Seomjin River. Being close to the market, it is easy to drop by during a trip, and the space carries a cozy, old-school countryside atmosphere. I ordered their signature spicy mitten crab stew, an indispensable specialty of this river region. The stew, served bubbling hot in a large earthenware pot, looked incredibly hearty and appetizing in terms of visuals. The rich, creamy roe and meat of the mitten crab infused beautifully into the broth, delivering an exceptionally deep and refreshing umami flavor. However, perhaps due to the strong regional culinary style of the borders, the dish felt a bit heavily seasoned and salty to my palate. Because the broth was so thick and savory, rather than enjoying it on its own, it created a much better balance when mixed thoroughly over a warm bowl of white rice with the tender greens. While it might feel a bit intense for those who prefer mild flavors, it is a local spot well worth experiencing if you want to encounter the true, concentrated richness of Seomjin River mitten crab.
