Walking into Hwangpyeong-jip, located on Mareunnae-ro in Jung-gu, Seoul, feels like stepping back in time. In a city that evolves at a breakneck pace, this long-standing restaurant (Nopo) stands firmly, holding decades of history within its walls. The rustic, unpretentious atmosphere builds an immediate sense of trust even before the food arrives. Their signature dish, Dak-muchim (spicy seasoned chicken salad), is a masterclass in culinary consistency. The chicken, which can easily become dry, boasts a remarkably chewy yet tender texture—a testament to years of perfected technique. The seasoning strikes an exquisite balance between tangy and spicy, deeply savory without being overwhelmingly intense. Combined with the crispness of fresh vegetables, every bite offers a delightful contrast in texture while elevating the natural, rich savory flavor of the chicken. If you wish to experience a bit different Korean chicken, a traditional one, then you have to visit here. Chicken Soup(닭곰탕) has the greatest soup in the world. But my choice is always Spicy Chicken with Salad(닭무침), a cold salad of chicken meat with spicy sauce. Please try it. It derives from North Korea. Goes very well with soju or makgeolli. Oh, even if you order the Chicken Salad only, a small bowl of chicken soup will be served for free. Mind that restaurant is little bit noisy and service quality might be less than your expectation.
