Not Big, But Well Above Average in Taste: Hyojeru I don’t usually go out of my way to look for Chinese food, but I decided to visit Hyojeru, a place relatively close by that has built quite a reputation as a Chinese restaurant. Since it’s known for having a wait, I went early on a Monday lunch hour, but as expected, a few teams were already waiting. Fortunately, the wait wasn't too long, and once seated, I realized that managing a queue actually helps keep the inner dining space comfortably uncrowded. Interestingly, boxing gloves, magazines, and CD cases were displayed on the interior walls. The dining space featured a good mix of window-side seats for solo diners and tables for larger groups, and ordering was conveniently handled via table tablets. To gauge the restaurant's true caliber, I ordered the essential trio: Sweet and Sour Pork (*Tangsuyuk*), Seafood *Jjamppong* (spicy noodle soup), and *Jajangmyeon* (black bean noodles). The *Tangsuyuk* is served with the sauce pre-poured, so even those who prefer dipping have no choice but to enjoy it as is. The batter was reasonably crispy, and the meat had a pleasantly tender texture—overall, a very well-balanced dish. The Seafood *Jjamppong* had a decent amount of fresh ingredients, and the broth hit the sweet spot: neither overly spicy nor too salty. The *Jajangmyeon* was done in a classic, traditional style—nothing wildly unusual, just delivering the satisfying taste you would hope for. Judging by these three core dishes, Hyojeru is a spot well worth a visit if you are nearby, offering flavors that sit comfortably above average. Located roughly halfway between Jongno 5-ga and Daehangno, it fits conveniently into a local food tour alongside nearby attractions like Gwangjang Market or the Jongno 5-ga *Dak-hanmaric* (whole chicken soup) alley.
