Akira Back at The Henderson – stylish setting, solid food, a few gaps A friend and I tried the weekend brunch at Akira Back. The space is undeniably dramatic: gold swirl walls, black marble floors, a pink bubble‑lit bar, and that flowing ceiling installation. It’s a beautiful room – easily a 10 for atmosphere. The food? A solid 7. Good, occasionally very good, but not life‑changing. What worked well AB Wagyu Mini Taco – crispy shell, seared wagyu, a little jalapeño kick, and kalbi glaze. Juicy and fun. AB Wagyu Tartare – pear adds lightness, Korean soy glaze gives it a nice savoury note. Razor Clam Ceviche – yuzu kosho, seaweed jelly, kiwi. Bright, refreshing, lots of texture. Chocolate Mille‑Feuille – sakura‑sencha jelly, Earl Grey ice cream. Not too sweet, genuinely interesting. What was fine but not outstanding The galbi short rib ssam was rich but a bit heavy; the caviar with nori cracker was pleasant. Pacific octopus had good char. Iberian pork loin was rather dry and chewy. Chirashi was fresh but unexciting. Service – attentive and well‑informed. Each dish came with a clear explanation, and the pacing was relaxed. Verdict If you want a glamorous, Instagram‑ready brunch in a stunning space, Akira Back delivers. If you’re going purely for mind‑blowing food, you might leave a little underwhelmed. I’d go back for drinks and the vibe – but maybe not for a full culinary pilgrimage. I would like to commend the excellent service at this restaurant, especially Lina at the front desk. Today, I accidentally left my phone in the restroom. It was found by a staff member and handed over to the security office. When I asked Lina how to get there to retrieve it, she kindly offered to collect it on my behalf. The restaurant also followed proper procedures to verify ownership before returning the phone. Thanks to Lina's help and professionalism, I was able to continue enjoying my meal and time with friends without interruption or worry. Her kindness and initiative made a stressful situation much easier. Thank you, Lina, and thank you to the restaurant for your outstanding service. Highly recommended! Meal type: Dinner

Fine Dining or a Used Car Dealership? A Masterclass in Upselling and Confusing Billing I recently visited Akira Back Hong Kong for dinner with a group of friends. As our party was getting seated, multiple waiters took every opportunity to continuously push the pricier items on the menu. When it was finally time to order, the experience only worsened. I started to order a dish, but before I could even finish my sentence to specify the quantity, a waiter interrupted. With a rather condescending tone, he pointed out that the portion was small. After we finalized our choices, he gave a disdainful look and bluntly remarked that it wasn't enough food. Throughout our meal, staff repeatedly interrupted our conversation to pressure us into ordering alcohol and additional drinks. It felt entirely like dealing with pushy retail salespeople trying to hit their targets. Meanwhile, our empty water glasses were completely ignored and never refilled. As for the food itself, it tasted fine, but the portions were incredibly small. However, the climax of this comedy of errors occurred during billing. We were suddenly told we had a substantial "minimum spend" to meet. Even if such a rule existed, shouldn't customers be clearly informed before ordering? We immediately pushed back, pointing out that the reservation deposit we paid online beforehand is an entirely different concept from a mandatory minimum spend. After we stood our ground, management came over and simply stated that our deposit would be refunded later, conveniently dropping any mention of the sudden "minimum spend" requirement. It felt glaringly obvious that because we didn't hit their expected spending threshold, we were subjected to poor attitudes, ignored basic service, and a sneaky attempt to enforce an unstated rule. If you want a relaxing fine dining experience without being treated like a walking ATM, look elsewhere. Food: 3 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 4 Meal type: Dinner
