Small japanese restaurant with counter and table seats. Ordered one each of all their 20 nigiri options and it felt like an omakase experience seeing the chefs at the counter and the food quality was just as great. Staff were friendly and super attentive. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $70–80

Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Neil Road, Izakaya Yoppi has carved out a niche for itself as a soulful, authentic retreat from the bustle of the CBD. Named after the nickname of its founder, Chef Yuki, the restaurant aims to provide "vitality for tomorrow" through meticulous Japanese craftsmanship and a warm, approachable atmosphere. This review explores the various facets of Yoppi—from its Zen-inspired interiors to the hits and misses of its extensive menu—to see if it truly lives up to its promise of a "gastronomical journey." 1. Atmosphere and Ambiance: A Slice of Kyoto in Neil Road Upon entering Izakaya Yoppi, the first thing you notice is the deliberate shift in energy. The design leans heavily into Zen influences, utilizing light wood tones, traditional wooden fences, and soft, rectangular Japanese lamps. It feels less like a loud, rowdy drinking den and more like a refined neighborhood eatery. The Seating: The restaurant offers a variety of seating options, including intimate booths and bar counters where you can watch the chefs at work. The Vibe: It strikes a delicate balance—casual enough for a quick lunch, yet sophisticated enough for a low-key date night. It avoids the "franchise" feel that many central Japanese restaurants suffer from. 2. The Menu: A Broad Japanese Spectrum The menu is impressively broad, covering everything from raw bar essentials to charcoal-grilled skewers and hearty rice bowls. Appetizers and Small Plates One of the standout starters is the Pitan Tofu ($6.90). The creamy, homemade tofu paired with a pungent, savory century egg sauce is a classic izakaya staple done with precision here. For those looking for something unique, the Tosa Tofu is a revelation; unlike the standard airy Agedashi Tofu, this version features a batter that is shattering-crisp, reminiscent of five-spice beancurd skin. The Raw Bar: Sashimi and Sushi Yoppi prides itself on air-flying ingredients from Japan, and it shows in their Salmon Sashimi. The cuts are generous, displaying a deep orange hue characteristic of high-grade fish. The Salmon Carpaccio ($14.80) is a popular sharing plate, thinly sliced and dressed with a tangy sauce that awakens the palate. From the Charcoal Grill (Kushiyaki) The heart of any izakaya is its grill. The Buta Shio (Pork Belly) is a crowd-favorite, offering a smoky aroma and a balanced fat-to-meat ratio. However, consistency can occasionally be an issue. While many diners rave about the juicy Tsukune (Chicken Meatball) with cheese, some recent reviews have noted instances where grilled sticks arrived underdone—a reminder that the kitchen can be under pressure during peak hours. 3. Signature Dishes and Lunch Sets If you are visiting during the day, the Set Lunches are arguably the best value for money in the Tanjong Pagar area.
