After seeing so many glowing reviews on TikTok and Google, I was genuinely excited to try Robata Akari. Having enjoyed similar robatayaki establishments in Japan, I came with high expectations. Unfortunately, the experience fell well short of the reputation. We had reserved a private room but requested to move outside upon arrival as the room was located beside the toilet and kitchen area, and there was a noticeable smell. While the waitress accommodated our request, her initial reaction suggested some displeasure. I initially brushed it aside and thought nothing more of it. However, during the course of the meal, she later remarked that perhaps we simply had “sensitive noses.” Perhaps. But if a guest is uncomfortable enough to request a change of seating, it may be worth taking the feedback more seriously. I have no issue paying premium prices for quality food. In fact, we intentionally ordered some of the restaurant’s higher-priced offerings because we wanted to experience Robata Akari at its best. Unfortunately, the food simply did not justify the pricing. The biggest disappointment was the Claypot rice and braised Wagyu and corn ($48). The name and description suggest a fragrant, comforting claypot rice packed with flavour and aroma. What arrived was surprisingly ordinary and lacked the richness and depth one would expect at this price point. To be honest, I’ve had more satisfying rice dishes elsewhere without the premium price tag. The Traditional Robata-style Grilled Blackthroat Seaperch ($158) was another dish I had looked forward to. While it was adequately prepared for 30mins, it was hardly memorable. At this level of pricing, diners expect something exceptional that leaves a lasting impression. Instead, it felt more expensive than impressive. The sashimi platter, squid, carpaccio and other dishes were decent enough, but none stood out as exceptional. There was no particular dish that made me understand why the restaurant has received so much praise online. Perhaps Robata Akari has become a victim of its own hype. When a restaurant is so heavily promoted and commands premium prices, expectations naturally rise. In this case, the overall dining experience failed to meet them. I left feeling more disappointed than impressed. For the prices charged, I expected much more in terms of both food and overall experience. Unfortunately, this is not a place I see myself returning to. Price per person: $100+ Food: 3 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 3

We went for our Anniversary dinner on Friday with reservation. The food was great! We love the Traditional Roberta-style grilled blackthroat, 5 kinds sashimi (so fresh and tasty) and the charcoal-grilled salmon and salmon roe claypot rice. We find the service great too. Special shoutout to Kassia and the other female staff whom we didn’t get her name. Kassia checked on us and made sure we enjoyed each dish and everything. She is knowledgeable and attentive. She also helped us take nice pictures. It’s cozy there, felt like home. All the staff are nice and approachable. Overall, our first-time experience here was great and we’ll be back again. Price per person: $100+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
