ZEST DINER has that slightly nostalgic, effortlessly cool air that feels intentional rather than try-hard. A bit of old soul, a bit of swagger. The open kitchen adds a welcome sense of theatre and reassurance, always a comfort when one eats out often enough to have seen things. The char siu rice is both the sensible choice and the correct one. Comforting, well judged, and mercifully free of unnecessary ambition. Not everything, however, earns the same praise. The minced meat rice is best left alone, oddly flat and missing the warmth one expects. The Swiss chicken wings fare no better, more confusing than pleasurable, and not in any endearing way. All that said, this is a place that knows exactly what it is, and rather refreshingly, doesn’t feel the need to explain itself.
