Dear Catch Beach Club Management, I am writing to share my disappointment regarding an interaction I had during my recent dinner at Catch Beach Club, Bangtao. I ordered the Blue Swimmer Crab Fried Rice, which I genuinely enjoyed. As someone who grew up eating fried rice with vinegar, I asked the waiter if I could have some. This is simply a familiar way of eating fried rice for me and part of what I grew up with. After the vinegar was brought to me, a female member of staff approached and questioned why I was putting vinegar on my fried rice. I explained that I had grown up eating it that way. While I was explaining, however, her repeated frowning and facial expressions made me feel as though my choice was being viewed as strange, wrong, or somehow inferior. At that point, the interaction felt less like genuine curiosity and more like judgment. What particularly upset me was that this was not merely a comment about food. I felt that something rooted in my own cultural upbringing was being questioned and looked down upon. What may be unusual to one person can be completely normal and meaningful to someone from another cultural background. I believe hospitality is, above all, about making guests feel welcome and respected — including respecting differences in culture, habits, and personal preferences. If a guest does something unfamiliar, there is nothing wrong with being curious, but the way that curiosity is expressed matters enormously. I could have responded by pointing out that there are many foods and eating practices around the world that may seem unusual to people from different cultures. However, I chose not to, because I believe mutual cultural respect should work both ways. I am therefore disappointed that I left the interaction feeling judged rather than welcomed. I hope management will take this feedback seriously and remind staff that guests should never be made to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed about their cultural practices or personal choices, particularly when those choices are completely harmless. I enjoyed the food and appreciate the effort that goes into creating the Catch Beach Club experience. That is precisely why I feel it is important to share this feedback. Beautiful surroundings and good food should be accompanied by equally thoughtful and culturally respectful service. What makes this particularly disappointing is that my husband and I are actually planning to return to Catch Beach Club. We enjoyed our evening and the food, and ordinarily I would have been very happy to come back. Unfortunately, this particular interaction has dampened my enthusiasm about returning. It is disappointing when one staff member’s comments and manner can leave such an impression that it affects how a guest feels about coming back to an otherwise enjoyable establishment. I hope this matter can be addressed appropriately and used as an opportunity to reinforce the importance of cultural sensitivity and professionalism among the team.
